well hello there, whoever you are

November 13, 2012

My name is Jennie and I am the only vegan in the village.

I live with my carnivorous husband and our two daughters in a small town, situated between some other small towns, in south-east Wales.  Despite my hopes that one day they will realise where that bacon came from and voluntarily embrace their mother’s example, they continue to grow fonder of their special trips to McDonald’s with Daddy, while their bedroom carpet disappears under a crunchy layer of Happy Meal toys.

The only other RL vegan I know is my husband’s ex-girlfriend, but as she and I are sworn enemies we will not be organising any vegan potlucks together for the foreseeable.

There is no tempeh where I live.  There is not even very much tofu.  Still, mustn’t grumble!  The versatility of the chickpea is infinite.  And internet shopping makes me cry with joy every day, more or less.

The kind of food I love is equal parts healthy and indulgent, or virtuous and sinful, if you like to attach moral values to food (ooh you naughty devil, you!).  Things wrapped in crispy pastry, things scattered with garlicky croutons, desserts thick with cream and always, always bright colours and freshness and plenty of my eldest daughter’s favourite bits – ‘the crunchy bits’.  I love a good, hearty belly full of the good stuff.  Some of it even passes for meat in our house, mwahaha.

And so, from the middle of nowhere I bring you the recipes that make up my life.  I will try to post as often as I can, and if there are any other vegans out there (hello?  anybody?) – which I’m sure there MUST BE, really! – then I would love to know what you think about all this, or about anything, really.

Anyway.  I will be back imminently with some recipes…
